Breakthrough in engine efficiency wins Cleantech Innovate 2015

Libertine FPE has won the €20,000 Climate-KIC cash prize at this year’s Cleantech Innovate London after pitching their free piston technology that increases efficiency for engines and small power generators.

Founded in 2009, Libertine develops high performance linear electrical machines and free piston gas-expander systems for use in a wide range of power generation, heating, cooling and vehicle applications.

Unlike conventional internal combustion engine-generators, which use a crank shaft and mechanical powertrain to spin a generator, Libertine’s free piston technology uses a dramatically simpler linear power generator. This novel approach can produce a third more power from the same fuel or heat source.

Libertine has made significant breakthroughs in solving the challenges identified by free piston engine developers in the US, Europe and Asia. The company is working with industry partners to demonstrate its technology in the UK water industry and in combustion research programmes.

Sam Cockerill, CEO at Libertine commented: “Receiving the Cleantech Innovate award is fantastic news for Libertine. In 2015 we will be demonstrating real world applications and how our technology can transform the efficiency and economics of decentralised power generation. The Cleantech Innovate award adds to our momentum as we reach out to our future partners and customers.”

Now in its third year, Cleantech Innovate showcases early stage companies that, with the right investment, will underpin the UK’s green economy. Finalists representing a broad range of technologies across energy generation, energy efficiency, water and the built environment pitched their concepts to an expert audience of investors and industry specialists.

Catherine Hokin, Co-founder of event organisers ecoConnect CIC explained: “The Cleantech Innovate programme is about commercial low carbon innovation. The judges recognised Libertine as an outstanding ambassador for UK innovation in this key sector. The London 2015 finalists were all exceptional technologies and we know that we will see this success repeated at our Scottish showcase on 4 June and as we expand the programme in 2016.”

The showcase opened with a keynote speech from Climate Change Minister Amber Rudd who spoke about the government’s clear and ongoing commitment to clean technology innovation. Celtic Renewables, who develop next generation biofuels, were winners of the Pitch Perfect Award presented by Life Size Media.

Libertine

While over a billion people currently don’t have access to reliable grid power, those who do waste more energy than they use. To address these issues, Libertine has developed a suite of new ‘Linear Power System’ technologies. These technologies will enable the development of low cost, high efficiency appliances for small scale power generation, heating, cooling and transport. Libertine’s technologies combine linear electrical machines with linear gas expander systems and can be applied in a wide range of small scale energy conversion applications.  With this technology Libertine aims to make decentralised power generation the norm, bringing clean, reliable and affordable power to wherever it is needed.
